Madam C.J. Walker developed a very successful business creating hair-care and cosmetic products, specializing in products for African-American hair. Her door-to-door and mail-order business (white department stores would not sell her products) was so good that by 1910 her company employed more than 3,000 workers. She was the first American woman to become a self-made millionaire. She gave generously to homes for the aged, the NAACP, and the black YMCA. (APS)
