Issued: Feb 1, 1978. 13¢ Harriet Tubman, Never Hinged.

Harriet Tubman (Araminta Green Ross) became a conductor for the Underground Railroad (a group of individuals, both black and white, who helped runaway slaves escape to freedom before and during the Civil War) when she escaped from slavery in 1849. Traveling mostly at night, Tubman “never lost a passenger” in her quest to help many slaves escape to freedom. Later in life, she worked for the Union Army as a cook, nurse, armed scout, and even as a spy. Harriet Tubman became the first African-American woman to be honored on a U.S. postage stamp. (APS)
