150th Statehood Anniversary.

"The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed the bridge featured on the new Minnesota Sesquicentennial stamp. State officials closed the Hwy. 43 bridge at Winona for at least several weeks after an inspectors discovered corrosion and holes in the 67-year-old bridge's gusset plates. Gusset plate failure was the cause of the I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis last August (2007)."

New MN stamp features Winona bridge

ST. PAUL (AP) - The new postage stamp commemorating Minnesota's 150th birthday features the Winona bridge that was closed this week.

The stamp shows the Minnesota Highway 43 bridge over the Mississippi River in the foreground of the picture.

The U.S. Postal Service issued the stamp 2 1/2 weeks ago. State officials closed the 67-year-old bridge on Tuesday after an inspection found rust and corrosion on several gusset plates.

New Brighton stamp dealer Dennis Abel calls it an "interesting coincidence" that will add interest to the new 42-cent stamp, "but not the value."
